Budget Season Isn't Optional. The Chaos Is.

By ·

It's mid-October. Somebody on your team has just saved Budget_v4_FINAL_real_v2.xlsx, and three department heads are replying-all to the wrong version.

Yep. Budget season is officially here.

The math was never the hard part

Frankly, the math has never been the hard part of budgeting. Finance teams are good at math. Give them clean inputs and a clear structure, and the numbers come together.

The hard part is everything around the math. Chasing inputs from people who have other jobs. Figuring out which file is the real one. Stitching it all together at 11 PM, when you should be at home.

How the budget season process turns into chaos

Most of the chaos comes from three places.

Versions. Templates go out by email, come back by email, and get saved under new names. By week two, nobody is sure which file has the latest numbers.

Chasing. Inputs arrive late, partial or in a different format than the template asked for. Someone in finance spends their week sending reminders instead of analyzing anything.

Stitching. Every returned file gets copied into a master workbook by hand. Every copy is a chance for a number to land in the wrong row.

We've started calling it normal

We've all gotten so used to this that we call it normal. It's just how budget season works. Everyone grumbles, everyone stays late, and everyone forgets about it until next October.

It really doesn't have to be.

None of those three problems is about budgeting. They're about how the inputs move. When every department enters its numbers in one shared place, there's only one version. When everyone can see who has submitted and who hasn't, the chasing gets shorter. And when the inputs land straight in the model, there's nothing left to stitch.

Start with one question

You don't have to fix all of it this year. Pick the one that costs your team the most hours, and fix that one first.

Budget season isn't optional. The chaos is.

So I'm curious: what's the one file name you're dreading seeing this year?
