Keep Excel. Lose the Month-End Assembly.

By ·

People keep asking me if we're trying to replace Excel.

Absolutely not. I'd be lost without it.

Why Excel isn't the problem

Excel is where finance people do their best thinking. Everyone on the team knows how to use it. The board can read it. You can test an idea in five minutes without asking anyone for permission.

Any project that starts with "we're getting you off Excel" is fighting the way finance teams actually think. That's usually the project that ends with everyone back in their spreadsheets six months later.

What actually wears finance teams down

It's not the thinking. It's the routine around it.

Every month end looks the same. Pull numbers from five different systems. Paste them in. Fix the links that broke since last month. Check it all again, because last time something was off. By the time the board pack comes together, there's barely any time left to look at what the numbers are saying.

That's the part I call the assembly. It's hours of work that produces nothing new, and it happens every single month.

Month-end reporting in Excel has one quiet risk

The assembly isn't just slow. It's where the risk sits.

One moved row can break a board pack. One link pointing to last month's file can change a number nobody thinks to check. And nobody notices until 8:55, five minutes before the meeting.

The more sources you paste together by hand, the more places that can happen.

Leave the thinking, take out the assembly

So here's how we approach it. We leave the thinking in Excel and take the assembly out.

The data from your systems loads into one place on its own. The reports and the board pack build from that one source, so nothing gets pasted and nothing gets rebuilt. Your team still opens Excel, still builds the analysis, still writes the story. They just start from numbers that are already right.

Month end stops being a rebuild and goes back to being about the numbers.

One question for your team

How many versions of your board pack are sitting in a folder right now? If the answer is more than one, the assembly is costing you more than time.

We'd never ask you to leave Excel. We'd just like you home before 2am at month end.

Still rebuilding the board pack every month? Let's talk about taking the assembly out.
