Case study
Three entities, two ERPs, and the hardest line in the consolidation finally shows its math, after moving from Planful to Vena.
In Planful, Samson Rope only uploaded trial balances. In Vena they have full general ledger detail, a 24-page reporting package, and an assistant controller now building the 2027 budget on her own.

In their words
“I think Vena is much more flexible for our needs and more robust than Planful was. All we did with Planful was upload trial balances. So the fact that Vena has all of our general ledger detail right there is extremely helpful.”

Before and after
| Before | After |
|---|---|
| Planful held trial balances only. Nothing below that level. | Vena holds all of the general ledger detail. |
| When the consolidation didn't tie, finding the problem was hard. | The team drills down in Vena to see exactly what is rolling up into an account. |
| Accumulated other comprehensive income was "just kind of like voodoo." You couldn't see how it was calculated. | A support schedule shows every piece going into that figure. That matters more with each entity they acquire. |
| Planful felt like a puzzle with its own background language to learn. | Reports start from an existing report or an existing Excel spreadsheet, then get linked. No building from scratch. |
| The project scope was the 24-page reporting package, delivered by MCC. | The assistant controller has since built cost center reports and the 2027 budget templates herself, with MCC support hours behind her. |
What we built
- Rebuilt the 24-page reporting package in Vena, the original scope of the project.
- Set up the three-entity consolidation, including the tools to reconcile eliminations when the consolidation doesn't tie.
- Built the AOCI support schedule from Karen's own spreadsheet, so the calculation is visible.
- Handed over to the team. After go-live, support hours went to the assistant controller, who moved on to cost center reports and the 2027 budget.
“In Planful that was just kind of like voodoo. It was something that you didn't really see. And in Vena, we have a support spreadsheet we can go to and see all of the pieces that are going into that.”

Monthly reporting moved out of manual Excel and into Vena, and now it flags when someone changes a closed period in NetSuite.
“I found inconsistencies from how I was doing things before, and now this forces a level of consistency. And frankly it better highlights when I find things that we have gone back and changed in NetSuite in closed periods. All of a sudden, wait a minute, this looks different than how I reported last month. So it helps me catch things that we shouldn't have done.”
